Iona Abbey

These photographs were taken at Iona Abbey located on the Isle of Iona just off the Isle of Mull on the West Coast of Scotland. This Benedictine abbey date to the 1200’s and parts of the church retains many fine medieval features. The living quarters for the early monks were ranged around a square cloister and the roofs of the four covered alleys are supported on arcades of paired slender columns,  restored in the late 1950s with carvings of birds and flowers. The contemporary sculptor Christopher Hall also worked for many years on carvings on the cloisters of the abbey. There is a very special feel to Iona Abbey. It is a wonderful place to visit and to photograph.
